If your business manufactures or imports television sets for the Indian market, a new notification is worth building into your compliance planning. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has extended the BIS CRS implementation timeline for Television Sets published via the Bureau of Indian Standards CRS portal on 26 July 2026.
Many businesses have been working toward BIS certification for televisions under this order including our detailed guide to BIS registration for television sets and factors like lab testing timelines, the underlying standard's own revision, and documentation can make the process time-consuming. This extension gives manufacturers and importers additional runway, though the applicable standard itself has also quietly moved on in the meantime.
At Absolute Veritas, we work with television manufacturers, importers, and brands on BIS CRS certification and regulatory coordination across India here's exactly what this notification means for you.
Television Sets were brought under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 via S.O. 1929(E), dated 26th April 2023, with compliance originally tied to IS 18112:2022. The implementation date has since moved more than once, most recently from 26th July 2026 to 26th July 2026's replacement date and this latest notification pushes it further, to 26th January 2027.
The order is issued under the powers of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and this amendment changes only the implementation timeline it does not remove Television Sets from the CRO's scope or relax the underlying certification requirement.
| Provision | Details |
|---|---|
| Implementation Date Extended | The compliance deadline for Television Sets under the CRO is extended from 26 July 2026 to 26 January 2027. |
| Applicable Standard | Registration is assessed against IS 18112:2025 together with IS 616:2017 / IEC 60065:2014, since IS 18112:2022 was officially withdrawn on 30 December 2025. |
| Scope Unchanged | Television Sets remain fully within the CRO's coverage this notification changes the timeline, not which products are covered. |
| Legal Basis | Issued under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, amending the Electronics and IT Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. |
Television Sets were added to the CRO through S.O. 1929(E), dated 26th April 2023. At the time, compliance was tied to IS 18112:2022 Digital Television Receiver for Satellite Broadcast Transmission Specification, which requires a built-in digital satellite receiver capable of picking up Free-to-Air (FTA) channels including services like DD Free Dish without needing a separate set-top box. Since the original notification, the enforcement date has moved more than once as MeitY responded to industry feedback on testing capacity, supply chain readiness, and the parallel revision of the underlying standard itself.
BIS revised IS 18112:2022 to IS 18112:2025 (First Revision), and the earlier edition was officially withdrawn on 30th December 2025. New CRS applications, model inclusions, and licence updates for Television Sets should reference IS 18112:2025 together with IS 616:2017/IEC 60065:2014 for safety. Existing BIS licence holders should also check whether a Change in Scope of Licence (CSoL) filing is needed to bring their registration in line with the revised standard.
| Standard | Status | Applies To |
|---|---|---|
| IS 18112:2022 | Withdrawn 30 December 2025 | No longer accepted for new applications or scope changes |
| IS 18112:2025 | Current | All new CRS applications, model inclusions, and licence scope updates |

The deadline has been extended to 26th January 2027, six months later than the earlier 26th July 2026 date. This is the latest in a series of extensions to the original timeline notified in April 2023.
New registrations should reference IS 18112:2025, along with IS 616:2017/IEC 60065:2014 for safety, since IS 18112:2022 was officially withdrawn on 30th December 2025.
It applies to television sets notified under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. Manufacturers and importers should confirm their specific models fall within scope before assuming coverage.
Television sets sold without valid BIS CRS registration after the implementation date would fall outside the compliance window, which can affect their ability to be manufactured, imported, or sold in the Indian market.
Businesses should confirm product coverage, complete testing at a BIS-recognized laboratory, and prepare the required documentation for BIS registration well ahead of 26th January 2027 to avoid last-minute delays. For further assistance, please reach out to Absolute Veritas.
